About Vanessa

Vanessa Benton is a black genre writer, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who specializes in creating large and often horrific worlds. Her stories are grounded in the psychological trauma that women of color and marginalized people face in those worlds. A graduate of New York University, Vanessa is currently staffed on a new drama/fantasy series set to air on a popular streaming platform (TBA). She previously worked as a writer/producer on HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER.

She began her career as the showrunner’s assistant to Terri Kopp on BET’s IN CONTEMPT and later as the showrunner’s assistant to Peter Nowalk on HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER.  Vanessa has written for the scripted, story-driven podcast, HAUNTED PLACES, and HISTORICAL FIGURES, on Parcast Network. She is the co-creator and co-host of an entertainment podcast, WE WENT TO SCHOOL FOR THIS, a comedy podcast where she and her co-host use their film degrees and viewpoints as women of color to discuss and dissect TV shows.
